The President becomes acquainted with hydropower facilities

During a visit to Bostanlyk district, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev inspected the small hydroelectric power station “Ugam-1”.

In Uzbekistan, all possible sources are actively used to increase energy capacity. In particular, hydropower in the regions is a convenient and effective solution for ensuring daily energy supply. Such stations can provide electricity to individual districts and mahallas without connecting to the general grid. The cost of the energy received is significantly lower compared to other sources, which makes hydropower a priority area of development.

Thanks to investments of $630 million in recent years, new hydroelectric power stations with more than 400 megawatts have been built, and their total capacity has reached 2.2 gigawatts.

In Tashkent region, there are 25 hydroelectric power stations with a total capacity of 1,330 megawatts, which is 60 percent of the country’s total hydroelectric capacity. Currently, four more hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 340 megawatts and a cost of $880 million are under construction. By 2028, it is planned to implement 23 projects with a total capacity of about 2.4 thousand megawatts worth $4.8 billion.

The small hydroelectric power plant “Ugam-1” has a capacity of 1.48 megawatts, which allows for the annual production of 11.8 million kilowatt-hours of environmentally friendly electricity. The station is equipped with modern, efficient hydroelectric units and an automated control system. It is noteworthy that domestic materials and equipment were used entirely during construction.

The implementation of this project will ensure an uninterrupted power supply to 5,000 households and tourist and recreational facilities in Chorbog, Khumson, and Ugam mahallas. About 4 million cubic meters of gas will be saved annually.

At present, two small hydroelectric power plants have been built on the Ugam River, each of which generates an income of 200 billion UZS per year. It was noted that ten such stations can be built due to the reuse of water flow.

This will solve not only energy supply issues but also improve the region’s infrastructure. New enterprises in entrepreneurship and agriculture will appear.

The President was also informed about the planned projects in other regions.

To increase the total hydropower capacity to 6 thousand megawatts by 2030, it is planned to attract foreign investment and the private sector. All legal and economic conditions have been created for this. In particular, the country has the potential to build up to 2 thousand micro and small hydroelectric power plants.
