India's population is close to 1.5 billion

India's population is approaching 1.5 billion people, and it will increase by another 200 million in the future. This is stated in the report of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), reports TASS.

"India is now the most populous country in the world with about 1.5 billion people; this number is expected to rise to 1.7 billion before starting to decline in about 40 years," the report says.

On average, one woman in India gives birth to two children, the document says.

The UN World Population Prospects report last year stated that India's population would peak in the early 60s of this century at about 1.7 billion people.

According to the forecast of the international organization, the world's population will reach 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s. gazeta.ru.
