US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told high-ranking officials in a closed briefing that Washington does not intend to invade Greenland; instead, its goal is to purchase the island from Denmark, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources.

"Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers that the administration's recent threats toward Greenland do not signal an imminent invasion and that the goal is to buy the island from Denmark," the publication wrote.

Rubio added that the White House is using its statements to pressure Denmark into entering negotiations, reported by ria.ru.
