The European Union has failed to adopt the 18th package of sanctions against Russia for its war against Ukraine, which includes lowering the limit on oil prices. At a meeting of the EU Council on Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, July 15, Slovakia again vetoed the package.
"I am very disappointed that we were not able to reach this agreement today. I must say that we were very close to him," Kaya Kallas, head of European diplomacy, said at the final press conference in Brussels.
Bratislava is blocking the 18th package of sanctions not because of its content, but in order to achieve concessions in connection with the EU's plan to abandon Russian energy resources RePowerEU. The Slovak authorities cannot block this plan, since its introduction does not require a unanimous decision. dw.com.
