Scientists have found a way to cool the Earth using airplanes

Scientists from University College London have found that existing aircraft can be used to cool the planet, rather than developing new ones.

This is a method in which small particles are added to the atmosphere to reflect sunlight and lower the temperature on Earth. The work was published in the Earth magazine.

Previously, it was believed that for this purpose it was necessary to raise aerosols very high — to a height of about 20 kilometers near the equator. This would require the creation of special aircraft. A new study has shown that if you spray particles at an altitude of 13 kilometers closer to the poles of the Earth, for example, in areas of Norway or Alaska, you can achieve noticeable cooling using conventional cargo liners like the Boeing 777F.

The method will work slightly worse than if the particles were sprayed higher and closer to the equator. To get the same effect, you will have to use more substances — about three times more. This will increase the risk of side effects such as acid rain. In addition, this method will cool the tropical regions worse, where the effects of warming are the most severe.

Nevertheless, scientists consider it important to explore all possible ways to combat climate change. It would be easier and cheaper to start using existing aircraft quickly than waiting many years for new technology to be created.

The researchers emphasize that this method does not replace the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The real solution to the problem of global warming is to achieve a reduction in the carbon footprint. gazeta.ru.
