The incident occurred at night in the eastern state of Assam. The Rajdhani Express train, en route from Sairang to New Delhi, crashed into a herd of wild elephants. According to the local forestry department, eight animals died.
As a result of the incident, five wagons and a train locomotive derailed. "However, there are no injured passengers," the administration of the North-Eastern Frontier Railway said.
Trains that were supposed to pass through the affected section of the railway were redirected along another route. Restoration work is underway.
