On May 27 of this year, Tashkent hosted the grand opening of the UN Women office, an important step in promoting gender equality and empowering women in the country.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Oliy Majlis and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, heads of UN agencies, international organizations, as well as representatives of civil society and the private sector.

It should be noted that the agreement at the highest level on the opening of the UN Women office in Tashkent was reached during the visit to Uzbekistan of the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Executive Director of UN Women, Sima Bacchus in May 2024.

The Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Tanzila Narbayeva, expressed support for the new stage of cooperation with UN Women, noting the importance of opening the office as an international recognition of the country's progress in the field of gender equality.

"Undoubtedly, the activities of this representative office in our country will play an important role in bringing our bilateral relations to a new level and further consistent development of constructive cooperation," said Tanzila Narbayeva.

The opening of the office coincided with the launch of a gender-based budgeting project funded by the European Union, which is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan. This project will be the first large-scale activity of the new office.

During the ceremony, Elisa Fernandez Saenz, Deputy Regional Director of UN Women for Europe and Central Asia, emphasized the importance of the office as a symbol of partnership, progress and hope for the country's women and girls.

"The path to equality does not end with the opening of this office – it begins anew, with greater commitment, with renewed hope and with an unstoppable drive forward," said Elisa Fernandez Saenz.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan, Sabina Mahl, stressed that the opening of the office confirms the country's strong commitment to human development and gender equality, and cooperation with UN Women will contribute to the implementation of these tasks.

The opening of the UN Women office in Uzbekistan marks the beginning of a new era in the promotion of women's rights and gender equality, which is especially important in the year of the organization's anniversaries and key international documents aimed at protecting and expanding women's rights around the world. This year, the organization celebrates its 15th anniversary, the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, peace and Security.
