The Constitutional Court decides on the referendum

    At a meeting of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the issue of compliance with the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan was considered by the decision of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On holding a referendum of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the draft Constitutional Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan” (with annex).

    The court session was chaired by the Chairman of the Constitutional Court Mirzo Ulugbek Abdusalomov.

    Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan Askar Gafurov addressed the meeting.

    As noted, mechanisms have been introduced to summarize and respond to the opinions and proposals of citizens regarding the draft law. So, through the electronic platform meningkonstitutsiyam.uz, the call center, the postal service, mahallas, local councils of people’s deputies and social networks, more than 220,000 proposals were received from citizens. Making a decision on the referendum of the Republic of Uzbekistan and setting the date for its holding is the joint authority of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate. According to Article 78 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the issue specified in the appeal of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis will be implemented after approval by the relevant decision of the Senate.

    The decision of the Constitutional Court was read out by the Chairman of the Constitutional Court Mirzo Ulugbek Abdusalomov.

    According to the decision of the Constitutional Court, the decision of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On holding a referendum of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the draft Constitutional Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan” adopted on March 10, 2023 (with an annex) corresponds to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

    No circumstances were preventing the submission of the draft Constitutional Law to a referendum. The submission of the draft Constitutional Law to a referendum is recognized as consistent with the Constitution.

    The decision of the Constitutional Court will be sent to the Legislative Chamber and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis.
