South Korea's Constitutional Court confirms the president's impeachment

South Korea's Constitutional Court on Friday confirmed the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol, removing him from office for briefly imposing martial law last December.

The Report reports this with reference to the Yonhap news agency.

The verdict, read out by the acting Chairman of the court, Moon Hyun Bae, entered into force immediately. The decree requires the country's authorities to hold early presidential elections within 60 days.

The elections are expected to be held on June 3, the newspaper points out.

In mid-December, the opposition-controlled National Assembly impeached Yuna on charges of violating the Constitution and laws by declaring martial law on December 3, deploying troops to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting against the decree.

Yoon Seok-yeol has denied all charges.
