Media: Zimbabwe president's helicopter crashed after takeoff

    The helicopter that Zimbabwe's President Emerson Mnangagwa was supposed to fly crashed shortly after takeoff. The president was not on board, the crew survived.

    This was reported by ZBC with reference to a statement by the Minister of Information of Zimbabwe, Jenfan Muswere.

    According to the statement, the incident occurred on September 15 in the city of Masvingo in the south of the country, where celebrations on the occasion of Munumutapa Day, coinciding with the President's birthday, were held for the first time. The festivities were organized at the initiative of the Youth League of the ruling ZANU-PF party in memory of the ancient Munumutapa Empire, which once existed on the site of the current Republic of Zimbabwe.

    The celebrations were attended by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his wife Oxilia Mnangagwa, Vice President Kembo Mohadi, Chairman of ZANU-PF and Minister of Defense Oppa Muchinguri-Kashiri and other senior representatives of the Government and the party.

    According to preliminary data, the cause of the helicopter crash was a technical malfunction. The Zimbabwe Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the incident, reports tass.ru.
