In a joint statement issued
on April 15, the parties announced they had found a mutually acceptable
solution to the issues surrounding the disaster, including compensation
payments. The document states that the aircraft crashed in Russian airspace due
to an "unintentional action" of the air defense system.
For reference, the Embraer
E190 liner crashed on December 25, 2024, near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan,
while a route from Baku to Grozny. The tragedy resulted in 38 fatalities, while
29 passengers survived.
Following the incident,
relations between Moscow and Baku had become strained, with Azerbaijan
demanding that Russia take responsibility for the crash. In October 2025,
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that the plane was downed by a
Russian air defense system. According to his statement, the incident occurred
due to a technical malfunction; the launched missiles did not strike the
aircraft directly but exploded approximately ten meters away from it.
Both parties stated that
the measures taken will serve to further strengthen the cooperation between the
two nations.
