The project aims to increase transport connectivity, reduce travel time, improve road safety and the resilience of road infrastructure to climate change in the western regions of the country.
The project will reconstruct about 87 km of the Guzar- Bukhara - Nukus-Beynau highway (A380) in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, including the construction of a new 75-kilometer Turtkul - Ellikkala -Beruniy bypass road and the renovation of a 12-kilometer section of the existing highway. The road surface will be made taking into account climatic stability: cement-concrete pavements, reinforced embankments and modern drainage systems will provide protection from the effects of climate change and extreme weather conditions.
According to Kanokpan Lao-Arai, Director of the ADB Representative Office in Uzbekistan, these investments will strengthen the country's role as a regional transit hub and will contribute to the inclusive economic development of Karakalpakstan.
It is planned to install intelligent transport systems along the transport corridor, introduce automatic weighing technologies in motion, as well as create five recreation and service areas. They will be equipped with charging stations for electric vehicles and provide safe and comfortable conditions for women.
The total cost of the project will be 293.7 million US dollars, of which 60.6 million dollars will be allocated by the Government of Uzbekistan. The project is being implemented in accordance with Uzbekistan's Development Strategy until 2030 and ADB's strategic priorities, including resilience to climate change, ensuring gender equality and deepening regional integration.
This year, the ADB and the Republic of Uzbekistan celebrate the 30th anniversary of their partnership. Since the country joined the Bank in 1995, loans, grants and technical assistance have been provided in the amount of about 14.3 billion US dollars.
