Hindustan Times: Pakistani troops invade Indian Kashmir zone

Pakistani troops on Tuesday invaded Indian territory in the Poonch sector in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and opened fire along the line of control separating the Indian and Pakistani zones of Kashmir.

According to the Hindustan Times, citing a representative of the Indian Armed Forces, the Indian military "gave an effective, controlled and verified response to the unprovoked invasion." "The situation is under control and is being carefully monitored. The Indian Army reiterates the importance of observing the principles of mutual understanding reached in 2021 between representatives of the Armed Forces of India and Pakistan in order to maintain peace along the line of control," the army representative stressed.

According to local media, the incident involving the invasion of Pakistani soldiers into Indian territory in Jammu and Kashmir occurred shortly before the visit of Interior Minister Amit Shah to the region on April 7-8. According to reports, Pakistani troops could have provoked tension on the line of control in order to ensure the penetration of terrorist groups from pro-Pakistani separatist groups into India. A large-scale anti-terrorist operation is currently underway in the Poonch sector.

Kashmir has been the subject of an ongoing bitter dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947, when British India, after gaining independence, split into two states along religious lines. There is no state border in Kashmir, its territory is divided by a line of control along which India and Pakistan observe a ceasefire. There are active groups in the Indian part that advocate its separation from the country. New Delhi accuses Pakistan of supporting extremists; Islamabad denies these accusations. tass.ru.
