Kan: Israel will resume fighting if Hamas refuses to release hostages

Israel plans to resume fighting in the Gaza Strip as a last resort if the radical Palestinian movement Hamas refuses to extend the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and release all hostages.

This was reported by the Kan State Television and Radio Company.

According to her, the Israeli side intends to gradually increase pressure on Hamas in addition to cutting off humanitarian aid access to the strip. In the future, Israel may again announce the evacuation of the population of Gaza from north to south and, if necessary, completely cut off the supply of electricity to the Palestinian enclave. An extreme planned measure is to return to combat operations using heavier weapons supplied by the United States, Kan notes.

In mid-January, Israel and the Hamas movement, mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States, agreed to establish a cease-fire in Gaza, which came into force on January 19. The first stage of the agreement's implementation ended on March 1, and 33 hostages were returned to Israel from the Gaza strip in 42 days. In exchange, the Jewish State released more than 1,500 Palestinians from prison, some of whom were deported from the Palestinian territories.

On March 2, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the suspension of humanitarian aid supplies to the Gaza Strip and the closure of all checkpoints. According to the Israeli side, this was done due to the refusal of Hamas to accept the plan of the US special envoy Stephen Witkoff to extend the ceasefire in the enclave. Netanyahu warned that in case of further refusal of negotiations, the radicals will face "additional consequences." tass.ru.
