President of Uzbekistan speaks by phone with the Prime Minister of Japan

    On May 12, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Japan Yoshihide Suga.

    Current issues of further development of Uzbekistan – Japan strategic partnership and multifaceted cooperation were discussed.

    The high level of practical cooperation, open and fruitful dialogue achieved following the high-level visit to Japan in December 2019 was noted with satisfaction.

    The Head of the state sincerely thanked the Prime Minister and the Government of Japan for the active support for the comprehensive reformation program being implemented in the country to build a new Uzbekistan, as well as for the assistance provided in the fight against the coronavirus and overcoming the economic consequences of the pandemic.

    In turn, the Prime Minister of Japan stressed his readiness to enhance financial-technical assistance to Uzbekistan to further promote the transformation and development of modern industrial and social infrastructure.

    The Japanese side expressed special gratitude for the continued support provided by Tashkent in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the return of abducted Japanese citizens.

    Prospects for the development of bilateral trade-economic, investment and financial cooperation were considered.

    President of Uzbekistan highly appreciated the productive partnership with JICA, leading companies and banking-financial institutions of Japan. Last year, despite the global crisis and quarantine restrictions, such priority projects as the construction of Turakurgan TPP, the second phase of the expansion of Navoi TPP, the launching of high-tech production of ammonia and urea at Navoiazot enterprise were implemented with the participation of Japanese investors and specialists.

    The importance of creating favorable conditions for increasing the volume of mutual trade and investment was emphasized.

    The leaders welcomed the initiative to introduce effective financial support tools for joint business projects.

    The parties also exchanged views on the international agenda, issues of ensuring regional security and stability. They expressed their readiness to enhance practical cooperation in the “Central Asia + Japan” format.

    The Japanese side announced its support and participation in the international conference on the connectivity of Central and South Asia, which will be held in Tashkent, July 2021.

    Following the conversation, the President of Uzbekistan wished the successful holding of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and invited Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to Uzbekistan.

    The telephone conversation between the leaders of Uzbekistan and Japan was held in a traditionally open, friendly and businesslike atmosphere.
