An international pilot project has been launched in the Samara region, within the framework of which Uzbek and Russian scientists will study the battle between the troops of the Khan of the Golden Horde Tokhtamysh and Amir Temur. This was reported to TASS by the press service of Samara Korolev University.

"Samara University named after Korolev has launched a major international archaeological project in which scientists from Uzbekistan and Russia will analyze various aspects of the military-political and socio-economic situation of Eurasia at the end of the XIV century and will try to determine the exact location of one of the most important battles in Russian history - the bloody battle between the troops of the Khan of the Golden Horde Tokhtamysh and the Central Asian Amir Temura," the university reported.

The participants will have to draw up a general work plan, work out the main directions of research, and form working scientific groups. In four districts of the Samara region - Sergievsky, Koshkinsky, Elkhovsky and Krasnoyarsk - will conduct reconnaissance of the area, including with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles and means of remote sensing of the Earth. Scientists will draw up expedition routes and plans for archaeological excavations, determine the most priority points of field work. In addition to archaeologists and historians, chemists, optical physicists, geophysicists, biologists and specialists from other scientific fields will take part in the project.

Among the participants of the project are universities and scientific institutions of Uzbekistan and various regions of Russia: the Research Institute for the Study of Problems of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Development under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Shakhrisabz State Museum-Reserve, the Shigabutdin Marjani Institute of History and the Alfred Khalikov Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Tatarstan and others. Samara University acts as the main organizer and coordinator of this international interdisciplinary research.

For reference: in 1391, Temur went on a campaign against Tokhtamysh, who had previously raided Temur's possessions several times. In June 1391, Temur's army of 200 thousand soldiers defeated Tokhtamysh in the territory of the present Samara region, the khan himself escaped. Four years later, Temur finally defeated his army in a battle on the Terek River. Most historians consider the defeats of Tokhtamysh in the battles of 1391 and 1395 fatal for the Golden Horde.
