UNICEF: 4.8 million children under the age of five have died worldwide

Over the past three decades, the world has made significant progress in the survival rate of children under 5 years of age. However, the situation remains difficult in some countries. The infographic shows how many children under the age of five are dying in African countries.

According to UNICEF, 4.8 million children under the age of five died worldwide in 2023. The most difficult situation is observed in Africa, where 2.76 million children did not reach the age of five.

According to the United Nations Inter-Agency Group on Child Mortality Assessment, Niger is the leader in the number of child deaths. 11.5% of children there did not live to be five years old. The situation is also critical in Nigeria, Chad and Somalia. In these countries, every tenth child dies before the age of five.

In North Africa, the situation turned out to be less critical. In Tunisia, the infant mortality rate was 1.3%, in Morocco — 1.7%, in Egypt — 1.8%.

These figures are comparable to those of Colombia (1.2%) and Mexico (1.2%). In Europe, the highest child mortality rate was recorded in Moldova — about 1.5%. naked-science.ru.
