The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Abt Associates, is launching a five-year Project "Uzbekistan Free of Tuberculosis", which invests $ 18 million to provide technical assistance in the field of comprehensive support services and expand access to key TB services throughout the country.

Uzbekistan continues to have a high burden of the incidence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, which poses a significant threat to the public health system of Uzbekistan, as well as to the health of the population and the economic development of the country. Uzbekistan is making steady progress, but tuberculosis remains one of the most significant threats to public health. According to the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, in 2022, eight percent of new tuberculosis cases in the country had resistance to the two most commonly used and effective anti-tuberculosis drugs.

USAID leads the U.S. government's global efforts to combat tuberculosis and is an important partner of the Government of Uzbekistan in the fight against this disease. The USAID Global TB Strategy for 2023-2030 is aimed at realizing our shared vision of a TB-free world. As the world's largest bilateral donor, USAID uses new innovations and research to accelerate efforts to eradicate tuberculosis.

USAID took an active part in the United Nations High-level meeting on tuberculosis, which took place on September 22, 2023. Atul Gawande, USAID Assistant Administrator for Global Health, participated in numerous events dedicated to the fight against tuberculosis, culminating in a high-level meeting at which he announced the Global Accelerator End TB Plus, which is an expanded package of activities that will accelerate the development of strategies to achieve more controlled, responsible and inclusive measures to combat tuberculosis.

From 1993 to 2023, the total amount of the US government's assistance to Uzbekistan in the field of healthcare amounted to more than $ 155 million, of which almost $ 60 million was directed to the fight against tuberculosis. The TB-Free Uzbekistan project confirms the unwavering commitment of the US government in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the prevention, detection of TB cases, treatment, reduction of stigmatization regarding tuberculosis, as well as Uzbekistan's reforms to improve health information systems, as well as health financing.
