Uzbekistan and the World Bank strengthen cooperation in the field of ecology and sustainable development

    Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change Aziz Abdukhakimov held a meeting with the World Bank's Global Director for Environment, Disaster Risk Management, and Sustainable Land Development Sameh Wahba.

    The parties discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of investments in irrigation, landscape restoration and air pollution control. Special attention was paid to the RESILAND project aimed at combating land degradation, desertification and climate change in Central Asia. This project is being implemented as part of the World Bank's strategy for sustainable development and protection of the region's ecosystems.

    The initiative of the head of state to proclaim 2025 the "Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy" was also presented to the foreign side. The program includes the Samarkand Climate Forum (April 4-5), the International Exhibition of Environmental Technologies Eco Expo (June 3-5), and the 20th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES COP20, November 24-December 5).

    S.Wahba presented to the Minister the reports of the World Bank: "Assessment of air quality in Tashkent" and "Roadmap for improving air quality management in Uzbekistan", developed jointly with the Ministry's specialists. The World Bank also proposed to strengthen cooperation in the field of air quality monitoring and improvement.

    Following the meeting, the parties expressed hope for the successful implementation of joint projects aimed at restoring degraded landscapes, developing ecotourism and supporting local communities. An agreement was reached on further cooperation in the field of atmospheric air monitoring and environmental protection.
