Uzbekistan will explore the possibility of using Chinese small modular nuclear reactors in the republic

    On November 4, 2024, as part of the participation of the delegation of the Government of Uzbekistan in EXPO 2024 in Shanghai, a meeting was held between the leadership of the Atomic Energy Agency (Uzatom) and the CEO of CNNC's subsidiary, China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas Ltd (CNOS) Wei Fuki.

    At the meeting, prospects for bilateral cooperation were identified and prospects for the implementation of joint projects in the nuclear energy sector, as well as initiatives for long-term cooperation, were discussed, the Uzatom press service reports.

    Following the visit, an agreement was reached on mutual cooperation with CNNC in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy, a detailed consideration of the possibilities of mastering the best practices of the People's Republic of China in the field of nuclear power plant construction, studying the applicability of Chinese small modular reactors (MMR) in Uzbekistan, the implementation of subsequent potential projects, as well as cooperation in the field of expanding capacities for uranium ore extraction, processing, production and export of finished products with high added value and subsequent use of fuel at nuclear power plants.

    Noting the ongoing consistent reforms towards the development of the nuclear program in the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Chinese side confirmed that the Chinese side is interested in developing bilateral relations in all areas of nuclear technology.
