Experts from the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo announced the formation of a new island with a diameter of about 100 meters as a result of the eruption of an underwater volcano near the Japanese island of Io.

During aerial observations, the eruption of an underwater volcano near Io Island was confirmed. Experts believe that during the eruption, when magma hit the ocean waters, a so-called phreatomagmatic explosion occurred, in which huge stones were thrown out from under the water, RIA news reports

Not far from the site of the eruption, a new island with a diameter of about 100 meters was discovered. Its surface is covered with volcanic rocks, and the border water area around it has a grayish-beige hue.

In this regard, experts believe that, as the eruption continues, the size of the island may also increase.
