Alisher Usmanov's decision to suspend his activities as President of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) was made in the interests of the organization. This is stated on the FIE website.

On December 4, FIE announced that Usmanov had suspended the activities of the president of FIE. Usmanov was elected president of the organization on November 30 at a conference in Tashkent. Emmanuel Katsiadakis, the representative of Greece, became the acting head of the FIE after the suspension of Usmanov's activities.

"After his unconditional victory, Alisher Usmanov stated that, guided by the interests of FIE, he would take the necessary actions to avoid the spread of legally untenable sanctions imposed on him to FIE and its activities, and in this regard notified the FIE executive Committee of the voluntary suspension of his powers. Everything must be resolved within the framework of law and justice," Usmanov's representative said.

The 71-year-old businessman headed the federation from 2008 to 2022.
