Passenger Ferry Hits Rocks Near South Korea Coast

On the evening of November 19, a large passenger boat (ferry) traveling from Jedju to Mokpo got stuck after hitting rocks near Changsan Island.

The local newspaper Kyeonggi Ilbo reported that there were 267 people in total on the boat: 246 passengers and 21 crew members.

The newspaper said the ship struck underwater rocks and stopped moving at about 8:17 PM local time. The Coast Guard quickly sent several rescue boats to the area. They confirmed the ferry was stuck on a line of rocks. Experts are now checking the ship's hull for any damage or if water is getting inside. Rescuers are still working to safely take people off the ship.As of now, there are no reports of anyone being killed or seriously hurt.

Since the "Sewol" ferry disaster in 2014, when a ship sank off the southwest coast, killing over 300 people (mostly students), safety at sea in South Korea has been a very important and sensitive subject, reported by informburo.kz.
