At the moment, science knows 32 thousand asteroids that may collide with the Earth in the future. Of these, 10.5 thousand have a diameter of 140 meters, at such a size, a celestial object can cause great damage to the planet, Mir24 reports.
There are 50 unknown asteroids in the near-Earth space, the diameter of which can reach one kilometer, scientists say. Bodies of this size can cause the death of humanity, destroying it as a species.
However, the data is still incomplete, there may be more such potentially dangerous asteroids. The fact is, experts explain, that they cannot be detected due to the lack of natural light. Thus, it is possible to detect celestial bodies only if they are in the correct position relative to the Sun.
