Ways to implement the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan to establish a high-level International negotiating group on Afghanistan under the auspices of the UN were discussed

    On December 15, 2022, in New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov held a meeting with Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding.

    During the meeting, the UN Deputy Secretary General was informed in detail about the essence and content of the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to create an International Negotiating Group on Afghanistan under the auspices of the UN, which was put forward on October 13 this year during the VI summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-building Measures in Asia.

    Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations R.DiCarlo welcomed the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan, which is aimed at achieving a broad consensus on the Afghan issue and taking practical measures at the global level. At the same time, she highly appreciated Uzbekistan's efforts on the issue of the Afghan settlement. The readiness to work together to actively promote this important initiative among the Member States of the Organization and to form the conceptual and legal foundations for the formation of a high-level International Negotiating Group as soon as possible was confirmed.

    R. DiCarlo expressed hope that the practical implementation of the initiative of the Uzbek side will contribute to fulfilling the expectations of the international community in Afghanistan, including in the field of human rights protection, the formation of an inclusive government, etc.

    The parties agreed to continue regular contacts to further advance the issue of creating an International negotiating Group on Afghanistan initiated by Uzbekistan, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan reports.
