The sentence includes imprisonment in a police detention center in Lima. Three other former presidents—Alejandro Toledo, Ollanta Humala, and Pedro Castillo—are also being held there.
According to the judgement, Vizcarra received bribes totaling $676,000 from construction companies in exchange for public works contracts. During the bribery period, from 2011 to 2014, he served as the governor of the southern region of Moquegua, reported by Reuters.
Vizcarra considers the court process to be related to his brother's, Martin Vizcarra's, intention to run for president in 2026.
