COP 29 President: 70 percent of carbon dioxide emissions come from cities

The share of the world's urban population may increase from the current 50% to 70% by 2050, which will create additional challenges for infrastructure and climate.

This was stated by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, President of COP29 Mukhtar Babayev at the ministerial meeting on urbanization and climate within the framework of COP29 in Baku, reports 1news.az.

"In the next 5-7 years, the urban population will increase by more than 500 million people. This will create additional pressures on urban infrastructure: energy supply, water supply, transport network and other key systems. Today, cities are responsible for more than 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions," the minister said.

    M. Babayev stressed that the growth of the urban population requires enhanced interaction of national governments with the private sector and public organizations to implement climate initiatives.

"It is important that national policies turn into local strategies that take into account the unique characteristics of cities. Regions and cities need resources, tools and authority to implement climate solutions. Initiatives such as the Baku Continuity Coalition play a key role by bringing together various stakeholders to work together.

Equally important is the financing of climate initiatives. Innovative financing mechanisms and the expansion of partnerships will increase investments in urban infrastructure, energy-efficient buildings and sustainable transport systems," the minister said.
