According to the results of archaeological research, the age of Samarkand was confirmed to be more than three thousand years, not 2 750 years as previously stated.
The international conference "Samarkand: 3 000-Year Heritage," which took place during the 43rd session of UNESCO, was dedicated to the in-depth study of the city's history and a wider illumination of its place in human civilization. The event was attended by renowned historians, archaeologists, and representatives of scientific institutions from Uzbekistan and foreign countries.
The conference opening featured speeches by the Governor of Samarkand Region Adiz Boboev, Deputy Director of the Department for Creative Economy and Tourism under the Presidential Administration Elmurod Nadjimov and Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Lazare Eloundou Assomo.
During the event, scientists presented reports on Samarkand's rich historical, spiritual, and cultural heritage, and shared new archaeological findings. In particular, excavations conducted at Afrosiyab, Kuktepa, and other ancient settlements confirmed that the earliest settlements in the Samarkand area date back to the 2nd millennium BC.
