Deputies of the National People's Congress (NPC) today, March 10, unanimously re-elected Xi Jinping to the post of President of the People's Republic of China for a third five-year term, according to the results of the vote.

The presidential elections were held on Friday morning at the plenary session by secret ballot, RIA Novosti reports.

Xi Jinping became the first president in China's history to be elected for a third term.

In addition, Xi Jinping was re-elected to the post of head of the Central Military Council of China, which provides leadership and unified command of all the armed forces of the country.

Xi Jinping was first elected President of the People's Republic of China in March 2013, and in March 2018 he was re-elected for a second five-year term.

The post of President of the People's Republic of China was established with the adoption of the country's constitution in 1954, Mao Zedong was the first to take this position. The post was abolished in 1975, and then restored seven years later. Previously, the Constitution limited the stay of the same person as President of the People's Republic of China to two five-year terms, but after amendments to the constitution in March 2018, the corresponding restrictions were lifted.

Xi Jinping will turn 70 this year, there are no exact forecasts about how long he plans to stay in power. Some analysts are inclined to believe that the current leader seeks to retain his position at least until 2035, during this period the first stage of the "socialist modernization and revival of the Chinese nation" is planned, during which the foundation for the development of a middle-class society should be laid, the army modernized, social, economic and political reforms carried out.
