Trump signed an executive order on the withdrawal of the United States from the WHO

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The American leader cited data according to which, during his presidential term, US contributions to WHO, with a population of about 350 million people, amounted to $500 million annually, while China, with a population of more than 1.4 billion people, paid about $39 million. "It seemed to me that this was a bit unfair. That wasn't the reason, but I quit [WHO]," Trump said.

At the same time, he outlined a version according to which the WHO leadership suggested that the United States not withdraw from the organization and limit itself to the amount of contributions comparable in size to that paid by China. "In theory, they should be even smaller," Trump said, lamenting that his successor, former President Joe Biden, returned the United States to WHO on the same terms after taking office in January 2021.

The process of the US withdrawal from WHO was initiated during Trump's first presidential term. On May 29, 2020, he announced his intention to completely terminate the country's relations with the organization, accusing it of allegedly being under the full control of China. The United States then informed the United Nations of its withdrawal from WHO on July 6, 2021. Former US President Joe Biden signed a decree on the cancellation of this decision on his first day as head of the American state. tass.ru.
