Scientists have discovered a potentially habitable planet 35 light-years from Earth

Scientists from the Trottier Institute for Exoplanet Research (IREx) at the University of Montreal have confirmed the existence of a fifth planet in the L 98-59 system.

They noted that the probability that it could be habitable is very high.

At the center of the L 98-59 system is a red dwarf with small rocky planets orbiting it. Previously, researchers only knew about four planets that are about the same size as Earth. More recently, an international team of astronomers has reliably confirmed the existence of a fifth one, L 98-59 f.

This was done due to slight fluctuations in the movement of the sun. They were detected and determined using radial velocity measurements by spectrographs. According to scientists, the found planet receives about the same amount of energy from the star as the Earth receives from the Sun. This circumstance gives the right to consider it habitable, since theoretically there may be water on its surface. mir24.tv.

Scientists claim that the L 98-59 system today has much more prospects for searching for traces of extraterrestrial life on it. The distance to it of 35 light-years is considered relatively close, The Astronomical Journal reports the results of the study.
