The Earth's temperature rose above the critical threshold of two degrees Celsius on Friday last week. This was announced by Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, writes newdaynews.
The excess occurred two weeks before the start of the UN COP 28 climate conference in Dubai, where countries will take stock of their progress in meeting the commitments of the Paris Climate Agreement. According to the UN, even if states fulfill their current obligations to reduce emissions, already this century the world will reach a level of 2.5 to 2.9 degrees of warming.
"We can expect an increase in the frequency of 1.5- and 2-degree days in the coming months and years," Burgess said.
Climate change increases the risk of dangerous weather events, and the likelihood is growing that the planet will reach irreversible tipping points, such as the destruction of polar ice sheets and the mass death of coral reefs.
