One of the striking examples was a new plant species, Gagea khassanovii, discovered in the foothills of Mount Imam (Aloy range) in the Andijan region. This rare member of the genus Gagea (boychechak) is distinguished by its graceful white flowers, thin petals and long petioles. The species was first described in July 2025 in the 260th issue of the international scientific journal PhytoKeys.
The study was conducted as part of a joint project by scientists from Uzbekistan, Russia and China. The new species is morphologically similar to Gagea circumflexa, but it has a number of unique features confirming its independence.
The plant was named Gagea khassanovii in honor of the outstanding Uzbek botanist, Professor Furkat Orunbayevich Khasanov, who made a significant contribution to the study of the flora of Central Asia.
The discovery of a new species has become an important contribution to botanical science and testifies to the rich biodiversity of the region.
