According to the NBC News channel, the decision was made due to the fact that the country's administration, as part of the fight against illegal immigration, has adopted a particularly harsh approach to issuing student visas.
It is noted that about 4 thousand visas were cancelled due to violations of the law by their owners, while in the vast majority of cases these are attacks and thefts. About 200-300 visas were cancelled due to "support for terrorism."
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier that he had cancelled the visas of hundreds of people, including students, because of their participation in activities contrary to the priorities of US foreign policy. He also noted that he intends to revoke visas from Chinese students.
President Donald Trump has clashed with several leading US universities, accusing them of becoming a "stronghold of anti-Semitism" following mass student protests in support of Palestinian rights amid the war in Gaza.
In this regard, the State Department has issued directives obliging diplomats abroad to step up screening and be vigilant against applicants whom Washington considers hostile and with a history of political activism.
Last week, the United States announced the suspension of all visitor visas for residents of the Palestinian territory of Gaza pending a "full and thorough review" of the process of issuing a small number of temporary medical and humanitarian visas.
