More than 40 athletes competing at the Olympic Games in Paris have contracted coronavirus, said Maria Fon Kerkow, speaker of the World Health Organization (WHO).

In addition, the number of infected people is also growing around the world, she stressed during a briefing in Geneva, adding that the disease spreads regardless of the season, RIA News reports.

"In recent months, regardless of the season, there have been spikes in COVID-19 cases in many countries, including at the Olympic Games, where at least 40 athletes tested positive," she said.

Earlier it was reported about numerous intestinal diseases at the Olympic Games. Athletes who had to swim in the Seine complained about the water quality in the river. It is known that some triathletes were poisoned and fell ill. Belgium and Switzerland have officially announced that their athletes are withdrawing from competitions due to an intestinal infection.
