More than 2.7 thousand laboratory-confirmed cases of mpox (a new name for monkey pox) were detected worldwide in September. This is the largest number of cases in a month since November 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported.

"In September, 2,763 confirmed cases of mpox were reported. This is the largest number of cases since November 2022, which indicates a trend towards an increase in [the incidence] in the world," the WHO noted.

Compared to August, the number of cases increased by 8%. The largest increase (by 35%) was registered in Africa, where 1,756 new cases of mpox were detected in September. At the same time, in Europe, the incidence decreased by 26% in September (to 211 cases), and in America by 32% (to 427 cases), TASS reports.

From January 1, 2022 to September 30, 2024, 109,699 confirmed cases of mpox were detected in 123 countries around the world, including 236 fatal cases.

The global health emergency regime in connection with MPOX was initially in effect from July 2022 to May 11, 2023. It was canceled due to a decrease in the incidence, but on August 14 of this year, the head of WHO, Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus, again declared an emergency regime due to an outbreak of the disease in Africa.

For reference: mpox is a viral disease that occurs mainly in remote areas in central and western Africa, located near tropical forests. The first case of transmission of this disease from an animal to a human was registered in 1970 in the territory of the DRC.
