An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred in the northern part of Afghanistan, 45 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The tremors were also felt by residents of the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan.

The epicenter of the tremors was located near the city of Mazar-I-Sharif in Balkh province. According to the authorities, at least 20 people were killed and more than 75 injured as a result of the disaster. Earlier it was reported that seven people were killed and 150 injured. It is noted that the number of victims may increase as rescue operations continue.

In the neighboring province of Samangan, at least two people were reported dead and almost 200 injured. The main highway between Samangan and Balkh was blocked by rockfalls and debris, which complicated the movement and delivery of aid.

The media also reported the partial destruction of the world-famous Blue Mosque in Mazar-I-Sharif. The Blue Mosque is the symbol and hallmark of Mazar-I-Sharif: according to some reports, it is one of the alleged burial sites of the fourth righteous Caliph Ali, the son-in-law and cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. tengrinews.kz.
