In particular, about 40 species and populations of animals, including rare and endangered species, have been included and updated in Annexes I and II of the Convention.
One of the significant decisions was the inclusion of the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), initiated by the Republic of Uzbekistan. This initiative, put forward jointly with the Republic of Tajikistan, was the result of consistent work to promote conservation issues at the international level.
The striped hyena is one of the rare and vulnerable species, whose numbers are declining due to habitat degradation, direct persecution and a reduction in the food supply. In Central Asia, the species is distributed in fragments and requires coordinated protection measures, taking into account its transboundary nature.
The adopted decision provides for strengthening the international protection of the species and the implementation of agreed measures, including population monitoring, reducing key threats and developing cooperation between the countries of the range.
At the same time, at the initiative of Uzbekistan, the inclusion of the striped hyena in the Central Asian Mammal Initiative (CAMI) was approved, which creates the basis for the subsequent implementation of agreed measures for its conservation.
Thus, COP15 supported both initiatives promoted by Uzbekistan on the striped hyena, both to include the species in the Annexes of the Convention and to launch mechanisms for the practical implementation of conservation measures.
The decisions taken confirm the strengthening of the role of the Republic of Uzbekistan as an active participant in international environmental processes and form the basis for the long-term conservation of the striped hyena in Central Asia.
