Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov held a meeting with Director General of the Union for the Protection of Nature and Biodiversity (NABU) S. Baumann. The negotiations took place as part of a high-level event to promote the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), organized in Berlin, Germany.

During the meeting with the head of one of the oldest and most reputable environmental organizations, agreements were reached on cooperation within the framework of international environmental agreements. In particular, NABU will provide expert support to Uzbekistan in implementing the country's commitments in this area. In addition, issues of increasing the number of saiga in Kazakhstan and improving environmental protection programs in Uzbekistan were discussed.

The parties also expressed their readiness to jointly develop documents, initiatives and events on the eve of the 20th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CITES Convention, which will be held in Samarkand in November-December this year.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Union for the Protection of Nature and Biodiversity. The document is aimed at joint efforts in the field of protection of endangered species and their habitats, as well as sustainable management of natural resources.

The main areas of cooperation within the framework of the memorandum:

·        Support projects for the protection of endangered wildlife habitats and the creation of protected natural areas.

·        Assistance to Uzbekistan in fulfilling its international environmental obligations, including cooperation with the IUCN and other multilateral organizations.

·        Implementation of professional development programs for specialists of environmental authorities (monitoring, species protection, environmental education).

·        Support for young scientists and specialists of Uzbekistan by organizing internships and training at leading German environmental institutes.

·        Support of anti-poaching activities and monitoring of wild animal populations.

·        Development of projects for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.

The signing of this memorandum opens up new opportunities for strengthening cooperation in the field of nature conservation and biodiversity conservation, as well as contributes to the formation of a more sustainable environmental policy in the region.
