Child poverty in Uzbekistan has been halved in 4 years — UNICEF

Between 2021 and 2024, child poverty in Uzbekistan fell from 21.5 percent to 11.4 percent — a 10 percent decrease over four years.

This was announced by Regina Castillo, UNICEF Representative in Uzbekistan, at an international forum held in Namangan.

In her speech, she particularly emphasized that social benefits, material assistance for children, and pensions have played a crucial role in reducing poverty. Without this support, the child poverty rate could have increased sharply.

Additionally, universal services guaranteed by the state — education, healthcare, and child protection — are a vital foundation for the development of human capital.

According to Ms. Castillo, reducing child poverty must remain at the center of socio-economic policy. UNICEF expressed its readiness to support the Government of Uzbekistan in applying a multi-sectoral approach to this issue.
