This was stated by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at a meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi.
"Based on the fatwa of the supreme leader, we have not sought and will not seek to create nuclear weapons in any way, no one is allowed to deviate from this policy," Peseshkian was quoted as saying by his press service.
"We declare our readiness to cooperate and get closer to [the IAEA] in order to resolve the alleged problems and dispel doubts about the peaceful nuclear activities of our country," the Iranian president added.
According to him, the United States is guilty of disrupting agreements around the Iranian nuclear program. "According to the IAEA reports, we have fulfilled all our obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, but it was the United States [in 2018] that unilaterally withdrew from this agreement and made it impossible to continue this path," Peseshkian said.
On November 1, advisor to the Iranian leader Kamal Kharrazi said that a change in Tehran's nuclear doctrine is still possible in the event of an existential threat to the country. According to him, the country has the technical capabilities to produce nuclear weapons and the decision of the supreme leader is the only obstacle.
Since 2003, the fatwa of the spiritual leader has been in force in Iran that the production of nuclear weapons is prohibited, as it contradicts Islam. Iranian politicians cite it as an argument for the exclusively peaceful nature of the national nuclear program, reports tass.ru.
