The Guardian: The "Mini-moon" will move away from Earth by 2055

Asteroid 2024 PT 5, known as the "mini-moon", will begin moving towards the Sun and move away from Earth by 2055.

According to the Report, this is reported by The Guardian newspaper, citing data from scientists from the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

It is noted that the asteroid is currently located at a distance of 3.2 million km from Earth, which is about nine times the distance to the Moon. He never got close enough to Earth to be captured by the planet's gravity.

Researchers believe that the object may be a large piece of rock that broke off from the surface of the Moon after a collision with an asteroid many years ago.

It is expected that in January it will approach the Earth for the last time at a distance of 1.7 million km before it is attracted by the gravitational force of the Sun. However, the small size of the object with a diameter of about 10 m will not allow you to see it with the naked eye.

Recall that asteroid 2024 PT5 was included in the ATLAS telescope system review in early August. Presumably, the object could become a temporary satellite of the Earth and people would be able to observe two Moons with the naked eye.
