The first flight of a new supersonic aircraft has been completed: it will soon be able to carry passengers

Boom Supersonic, in a publication on its official website, announced that the XB-1 single-seat supersonic aircraft, which was developed to test technologies for the larger Overture aircraft, successfully made its debut flight over the California Mojave Desert.

It is noted that the flight lasted 12 minutes at an altitude of just over 2 kilometers. As the company noted, the maximum speed of the XB-1 was no more than 440 km/h.

During the test flight, the company assessed the flight qualities of the aircraft, including its speed in flight, as well as stability during landing.

According to the press release, in addition to corrective commands from the controller, during the test landing the aircraft also used an AR visual system, displaying images from cameras installed on the nose of the XB-1 on a display directly in front of the pilot’s eyes.

The test model is equipped with three GE J85-15 turbojet engines capable of accelerating the vessel to a speed of Mach 2.2. It is expected that Overture will subsequently be able to carry up to 80 passengers while maintaining a cruising speed of Mach 1.7.
