Trump: Peace in Ukraine will come "pretty soon" or "never"

US President Donald Trump, during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House on Thursday, February 27, said that a ceasefire in Ukraine would be achieved "pretty soon" or "never at all."

"I think we have already made a lot of progress," he was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

When asked by a journalist whether Russian President Vladimir Putin could be trusted, Trump replied with the saying "trust, but check." At the same time, the US president, according to him, "does not think" that Putin, if he concludes a peace treaty with Kiev, will violate it and invade Ukraine again.

Trump was also asked if he feared that the proposed deployment of European peacekeepers to Ukraine could trigger article 5 of the NATO treaty, requiring all alliance members to come to the aid of one of them in the event of an attack. "I don't think we'll have any reason to do that," the American leader replied. He added that he generally supports the principle of NATO's collective defense enshrined in this article.

Trump refused to talk about the details of a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, saying that he wanted to first reach a peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev. dw.com.
