Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania are working on a unique chewing gum that can neutralize viruses right in the mouth and throat. This may become a new word in infection prevention, BILD reports.
The idea came up during the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Henry Daniel and his team created a rubber band based on plant cells that produce large amounts of CTB-ACE2 protein. This protein blocks the virus before it can attach to the body's cells. In laboratory conditions, such chewing gum reduced the concentration of coronavirus by 95%.
Now scientists are using the same technology to fight flu strains and the herpes virus. The new version of the rubber band has also shown encouraging results in the laboratory, and it is planned to be tested on humans in the near future. korrespondent.net.
