Scientists have warned that the Caspian Sea may split into two lakes

The staff of the Institute of Geography of ANAS confirms that the retreat of water in the Caspian Sea is not a temporary phenomenon, but part of large—scale processes that can change the face of the region.

This is reported by local media.

Mirnukh Ismailov, a researcher at the Institute, explains the decrease in water levels by active tectonic processes.

According to him, the Caspian Sea is located in a zone of young mountain formation: the Caucasus Mountains continue to grow, and it is this tectonic activity that affects the retreat of water.

"The Caspian Sea is located in an active tectonic zone. Since the mountain formation process in the Caucasus has not been completed, we are seeing a decrease in water levels. And tectonic processes are extremely long—term," the expert noted.

Ismailov warns that in the future the Caspian Sea may split into two separate water systems — the northern one in the Derbend depression and the southern one in the Lankaran Basin. This process is time-consuming, but unavoidable if the current dynamics are maintained.

Another employee of the Institute of Geography, Elnur Jafarov, adds that the water level may drop so much that the sea will recede from the coastline by more than 30 kilometers.

Experts emphasize that the changes are large-scale and will require serious monitoring and adaptation of coastal regions. minval.az.
