Mass protests broke out on the night of December 19 in Dhaka after the death of a young political activist Sharif Osman Hadi, who died in a Singapore hospital as a result of injuries sustained during an assassination attempt in the capital of Bangladesh on December 12. 32-year-old Hadi was one of the leaders of the 2024 anti-government protests. He opposed India's influence on Bangladesh's domestic politics.

When news of Hadi's death became known, thousands of people took to the streets of Dhaka, as well as other cities in the country. They accused the authorities of failing to protect the young politician. In addition to the offices of the Prothom Alo and Daily Star newspapers, protesters set fire to the office of the former ruling Awami League party. They also threw stones at the residence of one of the Indian diplomats.

The head of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, made an appeal and called for calm. He declared December 20 a day of national mourning in connection with the death of Hadi. Yunus also promised that those responsible for his murder would be found and punished. Bangladesh's security forces have been put on high alert.
