Scientists from Ferghana State University, led by biologist Bakhtiyor Sheraliev, have discovered a new species of fish in the reservoirs of the Ferghana Valley - Dzihunia pseudoamudarjensis.

This discovery expands knowledge about the endemic species of the region and confirms the uniqueness of the ecosystem of Central Asia.

Ichthyologists of the university systematically explore the water resources of Uzbekistan, fixing new species of fish that have not been previously studied by science. Last year, they discovered Triplophysa ferganaensis in the Shakhimardan River and Triplophysa daryoae in the Sokh River.

According to Sheraliev, "the region has a significant number of endemics, and our research shows that its biodiversity is still far from fully disclosed."

Dzihunia pseudoamudarjensis is distinguished by 84-86 ports on the lateral line, a narrow tail, low dorsal and anal fins, as well as a large distance between the eyes.

The results of the research are published in the international journal Zootaxa.
