A unique operation to separate conjoined twins was successfully performed at the Tashkent regional branch of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Maternal and Child Health in Chirchik.

Babies born prematurely at 33-34 weeks of pregnancy by caesarean section were separated just nine hours after birth. The surgery was performed on an emergency basis and lasted about five hours.

The operation was performed by a team of highly qualified specialists under the guidance of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Bakhtiyor Ergashev, head of the Center for Neonatal Surgery at the Republican Perinatal Center.

Minister of Health Asilbek Khudayarov visited a medical facility and got acquainted with the condition of the twins.

"Such complex operations are not performed in all countries. Even in countries with advanced medicine, they require long preparation and detailed research. The successful emergency separation of conjoined twins with severe congenital anomalies at the regional level is a vivid confirmation that domestic medicine has reached a new stage of development," the minister noted.

On behalf of the head of the Ministry of Health, a group of doctors who participated in the operation were awarded badges "Excellent Healthcare Worker of the Republic of Uzbekistan".

Currently, the twins' condition is assessed as satisfactory. The mother and children have already been discharged home.
