The document was co-authored by over 80 States representing all regions of the world.

The resolution is based on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan to establish a day of remembrance and solidarity as a sign of respect for earthquake victims and a reminder of the need for international cooperation in this area.

Speaking at the extraordinary summit of the Organization of Turkic States on March 16, 2023, the Head of our State drew special attention to the need to strengthen practical cooperation with international structures specializing in emergency situations.

The International Day will be celebrated for the first time on April 29, 2026, 60 years after the devastating earthquake that struck the city of Tashkent in 1966.

Earthquakes are among the most devastating natural disasters. Despite the fact that they make up a relatively small proportion of all natural disasters, it is earthquakes that often lead to the most tragic consequences.

The resolution calls on the UN Member States, UN agencies and other international organizations to promote the observance of the International Day, including through information and educational events aimed at raising awareness, strengthening resilience and emergency preparedness.

The adoption of the document was highly appreciated by the international community. Its particular relevance is noted in the context of the increasing frequency of destructive earthquakes in different parts of the world.

The approval of this initiative is another confirmation of Uzbekistan's growing authority in the international arena and its contribution to promoting global solutions that meet the interests of all mankind, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan reports.
